Demand justice for Dhaka garment workers

UNISON is calling on members to sign a petition demanding justice for the victims of the Bangladesh garment factory disaster.

The petition, which is being organised by War on Want, closes this Wednesday, 15 May.

It calls on the brands that were employing workers at the factory to pay compensation take steps to make sure the tragedy is never repeated.

Some 1,127 people are confirmed to have died after the factory complex collapsed on 24 April.

War on Want is one of many workers’ rights organisations, including the Clean Clothes Campaign, which are working alongside global union IndustriALL to create a strong agreement that will make these disasters a thing of the past.

UNISON head of international relations Nick Sigler said: “The tragic loss of life in Dhaka must compel clothes retailers to act so that the scandal of slave wages and unsafe and inhuman working conditions is brought rapidly to an end – not just in Bangladesh but worldwide.”
