UNISON dominates new environment body in Wales

The Welsh government has formed a new organisation, Natural Resources Wales (NRW), from a merger between the Welsh part of the Environment Agency, the Countryside Council and the Forestry Commission.

From 1 April 2013, the Environment Agency became an England-only body, but continues to work with Natural Resources Wales.

NRW has taken over responsibility for managing everything from flood defences to managing Wales’s new national coastal path.

But despite these significant upheavals, UNISON remains the biggest union in the new organisation.

Matthew Lay, UNISON’s national officer for Water, Environment and Transport said: “Its good to know that UNISON will be the biggest trade union in the newly created Natural Resources Wales. This position of strength, aligned to the excellent lay reps who have transferred, will ensure members are well supported going into the future.

“UNISON has a strong track record of delivering for members in the Environment Agency and I believe this will definitely be true in NRW despite the challenges the reorganisation brings with it.”
