Conference hears call to arms on recruitment

“We’re going to go out and recruit as we’ve never recruited before,” said UNISON assistant general secretary Liz Snape, as she told the women’s conference about the union’s big recruitment campaign, which is due to launch on 11 March.

The union will be advertising online, in newspapers, on the television and in social media, along with a press campaign.

What’s essential, she continued, “is that activists lead this campaign. But what’s even more essential is that our women activists lead it.”

She emphasised that the campaign would build on the recruitment, organising and advertising work that the union has always done.

“Our union has a fantastic recruitment record. We’re the only union that has increased its membership, year on year.”

But she explained that, for the first time, the campaign mean that recruitment, organising and advertising would “all take place at the same time.

“It’s a tough environment for unions at the moment,” she said, but “we can go out and build our union, despite the problems.”
