UNISON condemns tax breaks for millionaires

UNISON, the UK’s largest union, condemned the government for handing out tax breaks to millionaires whilst clobbering those in and out of work with a three year benefit and tax credit squeeze.

Dave Prentis, UNISON General Secretary, said:

“True to form the Tories are handing out tax breaks to the rich whilst taking desperately needed money away from low paid working families and the unemployed. Families are already struggling and food and energy prices are set to soar this year– they will not cope with hundreds of pounds less in their pockets. What sort of country are we in where children pay the price – child poverty is now set to soar. Welcome to Cameron’s Britain.

“If the benefits bill needs to be cut we should target those profit making employers who pay poverty wages and force staff to rely on state funded top ups. Making employers pay workers a living wage that allows them to stay out of poverty could save the taxpayer £2 billion a year.”
