UNISON, the UK’s largest union, today called on the Government to “step away” and allow charities and the voluntary sector to speak out and campaign on behalf of the people they serve.
Karen Jennings, Assistant General Secretary, said:
“The Government must step away and stop any interference in the vital role that charities play in speaking out and campaigning on behalf of the vulnerable people they serve. We are witnessing a dangerous move towards neutering their role and making them indistinguishable from private companies bidding for public sector contracts.
“Charities are too afraid to rock the boat and risk losing much needed funding. Instead of relying on grants they must compete for public sector contracts, opening the door to a more commercial mindset. This compromises their advocacy and campaigning role because they risk losing contracts if they criticise public sector commissioners.
“Charities have a unique role and must be free from Government interference, free, to expose bad practice and free to make their voices heard.
