MPs gather to hear UNISON members’ views

Everyone should have equal access to a lifetime of high quality education, declares a new report from UNISON which was launched at the Houses of Parliament last week.

Education: our future sets out the union’s agenda for an integrated, comprehensive education system, which can be “the engine of economic success, as well as a major vehicle for tackling inequality, delivering social justice and maintaining a stable and fulfilled society”.

UNISON wants a high quality education system – but it also wants to fulfil the aspirations of support staff working in education.

Some 100 guests at the launch event in Westminster – including 30 MPs from all three main parties and peers – met a range of UNISON members from across the UK working in early years, schools, careers and further and higher education, who talked about the vital work they do in their everyday jobs.

The event was hosted by shadow education minister Sharon Hodgson.

Speeches by general secretary Dave Prentis, shadow education secretary Stephen Twigg and Labour’s Lords education spokesperson Baroness Jones highlighted the variety of work and roles that support staff carry out across education.

Education: our Future can be ordered free for members from UNISON’s online catalogue here, quoting stock number 3066.
