UNISON calls for access to relief workers in Syria

UNISON is urging its members to add their names to an online “solidarity petition” calling for an end to the violence in Syria and for access to be granted to humanitarian relief workers.

Oxfam has started the petition in response to a crisis that is “deepening every hour”. Of immediate concern is the delay in allowing the Red Cross into areas of the city of Homs that have been under siege by the Syrian army.

“UNISON believes that humanitarian relief workers must be allowed access to those cities that have been under siege,” said international officer Nick Crook today.

“The union also wants a peaceful transition to democracy in Syria, which will allow the establishment of independent trade unions and free collective bargaining.

“However, the longer the Assad regime stays in power the greater the risk that Syria will descend into civil war.”

It is a year since demonstrations started in Syria calling for a transition to democracy in that country.

ITUC general secretary Sharan Burrow commented: “More than 5,000 people have been killed, many more injured and thousands remain in prison.

“The situation is bound to get worse, as the country slides further towards all-out civil war between reformers and a regime that has no legitimacy.

“The international community must step up pressure for Assad and his entourage to step aside and for a process of democratisation to begin, with the development of civil society organisations including genuine trade unions.”
