UNISON members gathered outside county hall in West Bridgeford, Nottinghamshire today to lobby against £180m of cuts Nottinghamshire county council plans to implement over the next three years.
The Tory council has already axed 2,500 jobs with the threat of more to follow. Amongst those to be affected by the cuts, said joint branch secretary Martin Sleath, were up to 40 disabled workers at Sherwood Industries, an organisation that supports employment for disabled people. Mr Sleath warned that “in the current climate there will be little chance of alternative employment.”
The lobby was supported by UNISON members, service users, local anti-cuts campaigners and Labour councillors.
UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis sent a message of support to the branch, reminding them that “as you take a stand for public services today in Nottingham you have 1.4 million UNISON members standing with you across the UK.”
