The day of action on 30 November will see “probably the biggest demonstration seen in the North East since the minimum wage march many years ago”, UNISON’s northern regional convenor Clare Williams says.
UNISON, working with the Northern TUC and the Public Services Alliance, have organised a series of events across the region for the day of action, including two main rallies in Newcastle and Middlesbrough.
In Newcastle, supporters will march across the Tyne Bridge to a quayside rally at Spillers Wharf, where there will be a line-up of national and regional speakers from all the trade unions.
“People are talking about ten thousand or more people – there’s a real buzz,” Ms Williams says. “The feeling from all trade unions and groups that we’ve been working with is that there will be a massive display of strength on the day and that there’s a large amount of public support for public service workers and the action that we’re taking.”
