UNISON slams school support staff £250 pay snub

Chancellor's broken promise over pay

UNISON has slammed the Government for breaking its promise on the £250

pay increase for all school support staff.

The Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, has recommended today

that only unqualified teachers who earn £21,000 or less, receive a £250 pay

increase.

Jon Richards, UNISONs Senior National Officer for Education, said:

“The Government is piling misery onto thousands of low-paid workers and

their families by snubbing their promised pay increase. While unqualified

teachers earning £21,000 per year, or less, will get a small pay increase,

school support staff are hit with a pay freeze.

“At a time of rising inflation, the Chancellor has gone back on his promise

that those most in need in the public sector would get the £250. The

Government must think again, as teaching assistants, school secretaries,

school meals staff, cleaners and caretakers are the lowest paid school staff

and deserve to be treated better.”
