UNISON has slammed the Government for its “Week of Shame”, which saw more than 23,000 jobs supporting vital services slashed across the UK.
The UK’s largest union’s dossier continues to expose the latest casualties of the Government’s savage cuts agenda and reveals that more than 120,000 public sector workers have joined the 2.5 million already unemployed in the last seven weeks.
As consumer confidence hits record lows, the union is blowing away the Big Society smokescreen and revealing the public services bonfire being stoked by David Cameron.
Dave Prentis, UNISON’s General Secretary, said:
“The Con-Dem Government’s week of shame has seen it shatter the livelihoods of more than 23,000 hard-working public sector staff and their families.
“David Cameron may still be trying to peddle the Big Society idea, but people can see through the smokescreen. There is no smoke without fire and now the public service bonfire has been lit. The whole of society will be scarred, while the Con-Dem’s continue to take the heat off themselves.
“The damage done by these cuts will ripple through communities struggling to ride out of the recession, hitting local businesses and vulnerable people, who rely on these vital services. It is a disgrace that the Government believes that care homes, libraries and youth centres are services that these struggling communities can live without.”
UNISON will continue to expose where the Government’s axe is falling and continuing to argue for a fairer alternative.
