Motorcyclist receives compensation after amputation

A former nursing student has received a six-figure sum, with help from

UNISON, after she lost her leg in a motorbike crash.

Lisa Bennett, 43, from Poole in Dorset, has been cared for by her son since

she was knocked off her 125cc motorbike by a car in December 2004.

The trainee psychiatric nurse, who had been riding motorbikes for more than

20 years, had to have extensive treatment and counselling after suffering a

shattered right leg, which was so badly injured it was amputated below the

knee.

Ms Bennett needed four further operations after the amputation to control

infection and also suffered injuries to her left knee, a fractured spine, broken

ribs and a broken shoulder.

The mother-of-one now uses a prosthetic limb, but due to severe nerve

damage, she still suffers extreme pain and must use a wheelchair to help her

around the house and when traveling long distances.

She had been in her second year of a degree at Bournemouth University at

the time of the crash and had hoped to work at Kings Park Hospital in

Boscombe, specialising in Alzheimer
