UNISON, the UK’s leading public sector trade union, today called on the Welsh Assembly government to step in and help Welsh Water, to avoid the loss of 300 jobs. The cuts, say the union, will hit families and the Welsh economy hard.
Dave Prentis, UNISON General Secretary, said:
“These job losses are a great disappointment, and a tragedy for individuals and their families. They will damage recovery of the Welsh economy. The cuts come at the same time as the water industry needs to face up to major challenges to upgrade our water and sewerage system.
“Gas Cymru, the parent company of Welsh Water, has pioneered a new ownership model in the water sector. It has managed to avoid falling into the hands of private equity, unlike so many of its counterparts In England. The Welsh Assembly Government should intervene, to secure a steady water supply for the people of Wales.”
