UNISON chief condemns RBS ‘Bonus Bonanza’

UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis, today condemned the £1.3 billion

bonanza bonuses being paid out to RBS investment bankers. He said:

“It is totally wrong and immoral for RBS bankers to be paid these bonanza

bonuses. Do they have no shame? They really have struck gold. These are

figures that our members couldn’t even dream about earning in a lifetime.

Are these people worth so much more than a nurse or a paramedic or a social

carer? Are they worth so much more than the millions of other public sector

workers who don’t gamble on the stock exchange or get massive bonuses,

just for doing their job?

“It was the greed and reckless folly of these bankers and financial institutions

who plunged our economy into freefall. Yet, they get mega rewards and our

members end up paying the price with their jobs and pay cuts.

“We need some sense of fair play injected into the system. The public sector

should not be made to pay the price for the banks’ failures and those

responsible should be a bit more humble and a little less grasping.”
