Cameron threat to tighten anti-union laws, UNISON reaction

UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis, reacting to Tory Leader David

Cameron’s comments that he would be ‘happy’ to tighten anti-union laws to

stop public sector workers striking over a pay freeze, said:

“This is typical of Cameron’s Tories who are reverting to type. Instead of

attacking their rich friends in the city who caused the recession, they turn their

fire on ordinary hard-working public servants.

“Let’s not forget that public service workers have been out in all weather, who

day in day out, care for the sick, children, vulnerable, elderly, keep our streets

clean and safe, and make sure we have heating and lighting. They should be

supported by all politicians, not denigrated.

“We already have the toughest strike laws in Europe. Now we have Cameron

signalling industrial strife, he would far rather pick a fight with the unions than

spell out exactly what are his policies on the public services. This will be a

huge turn-off for public sector workers and the people who rely on those

services.”
