UNISON Deputy General Secretary, Keith Sonnet, is today (30 December) calling for an immediate end to the Israeli military action in Gaza that has resulted in hundreds of Palestinian civilian deaths and casualties.
“Whilst UNISON condemns rocket attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilian targets causing dreadful suffering, the bombing in Gaza is completely disproportionate to the threat faced by Israel. Both sides should agree an immediate ceasefire and Israel should open crossings into Gaza to allow humanitarian relief.
“UNISON is calling on the British Government to do all it can to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza and to make clear to the Israeli Government that the widespread military assault on Gaza is unacceptable. The military action will do nothing to promote peace in the region.
“UNISON is opposed to the use of violence by either side, and we will encourage our members to take part in the local protests being organised across the country. We appeal also to both sides to allow humanitarian aid through, to ensure the death toll does not rise any higher due to lack of food and basic medical equipment.”
