Report shows inequality is caused by ongoing poverty pay

UNISON is urging the Government to put an end to endemic poverty pay that undermines its equalities gains.

The comments come as a new report by think tank Compass (‘Closer to equality? Assessing New Labour’s record on equality after 10 years in government’) reveals that, despite real progress, Labour has so far failed to create a more equal society.

UNISON General Secretary Dave Prentis said:

“During the Tory years of the 1980s and 1990s, huge inequalities opened up in our society, undermining our sense of community and condemning millions to lives of deprivation and unfulfilled potential.

“In the decade since Labour came to power we have seen some real inroads made into tackling this legacy of social injustice.
