Police service – the dinosaur employer

UNISON said today (19 June) that the police service is becoming a dinosaur employer when it comes to terms and conditions for staff.

The police service is the last of the public services to review its terms and conditions for staff, still offering inconsistent holiday entitlement and pay across the 43 police forces of England and Wales.

More worrying is the gender pay gap that exists in the service. Women make up 65% of the existing workforce yet they earn on average 10% less than their male colleagues. This has been brought to the attention of the police service but is still being ignored. The service keeps employing expensive private companies, who have questionable equal pay credentials, wasting huge amounts of public money. Recently the union has won an equal pay claim in South Wales Police and is looking at more claims throughout England and Wales.

At its national conference the union called on the Home Office to implement a national set of terms and conditions for police staff across the board.
