UNISON General Secretary, Dave Prentis, congratulated
Chancellor Gordon Brown for his part in getting £30 billion of debt
for 18 of the world’s poorest countries cancelled. But emphasised
that
more has to be done.
He said:
ÒOur Chancellor is to be congratulated for his part in this act. ItÕs a
great start Ð a big step forward and millions of the worldÕs poorest
children will benefit as a result.
ÒHowever, while no-one can deny the importance of what has
been achieved, there is still more to do. The big job for the
Chancellor is to now persuade the G8 to cancel debt for the rest of
the worldÕs poor countries, to double aid and to deliver trade
justice.
ÒWe also need to be sure that the money to cover the debt
cancellation does not come out of existing aid budgets, but is
genuinely new money.Ó
UNISON supports the Make Poverty History campaign and will be
using its conference in Glasgow next week to mobilise its
1.3million members to support MPH initiatives.
