Blog: This Christmas, UNISON members will be working around the clock

As we get into the final weeks of the year, many people will begin to think about Christmas. For most that means shopping, cooking and spending time with loved ones. But for many UNISON members, this special time of year isn’t a time of rest, it’s a time of work.

In hospitals, care homes and police stations around the country, UNISON members will be working around the clock, serving our communities and our loved ones as they always do.

One of the greatest honours and privileges of being your General Secretary is that I get to meet so many incredible public service workers. Of course, UNISON members don’t realise how special you all are, and how important you are to the lives of those who rely on you.

At this time of year, when the days are shorter, the weather is colder and the rest of the country has multiple bank holidays to look forward to, the sheer determination, passion and commitment of UNISON members really does shine through.

So whether you’re spending this festive period with family, or gritting our streets, travelling long distances to see loved ones or driving around your community caring for those who can’t care for themselves, I want to say thank you. Thank you for everything you do for all of us, now and every single day of the year. I can never say that enough – no-one ever says that to you often enough. You are the glue that holds our fractured communities together, especially at a time when cuts and austerity have caused such havoc and harm.

This year UNISON celebrates 25 years of our union. As I’ve said for a quarter of a century, it’s our members who are our greatest asset. Everything we do, everything we achieve, begins and ends with you. So as we approach the end of 2018 and begin to look ahead to a new year, I will continue to be inspired by your dedication and your service. And I promise you, as you service our communities, our union will always focus on what we do best – serving you.
