In two weeks time, our union meets in Brighton for national delegate conference – the beating heart of our union.
It’s a great opportunity to come together as a public service workers, meet old friends and new and recommit to our shared values of equality, democracy and publicly owned services. Personally, I love seeing so many of you together in one place, hearing your stories of fighting and winning for our members and learning about the awe-inspiring campaigns you lead.
That’s because national delegate conference isn’t like other union conferences – like our union, it’s special.
I’m proud that at UNISON, everything our union does is focussed on what’s best for our members.
Yet this year conference gives us an even greater opportunity to help all 1.3 million UNISON members – and future members. This year we’ll be debating a motion on a review of everything our union does – with the aim of making the UK’s best union even better still for our members.
We can and must be a union that meets the UNISON members of the future where they are, not demanding that they conform to our structures. We can be a union that appeals to those who need us most – including those who work in some of the most difficult, low-paid and precarious public sector roles.
In two weeks, we will be in Brighton together again. We will decide the priorities of our union. And we will renew our union too. I hope that makes you all as proud of our union as I am.
