A by-election will be held for a vacant seat on the National Executive Council (NEC). The seat is the Local Government Female seat.
The nomination period opened on Thursday 26 February 2026 and will close at 5pm on Thursday 2 April 2026.
Who are the candidates in this election?
Candidate applications are welcomed from members who have held full membership of UNISON since 19 November 2025.

When is the ballot?
The ballot opens on 7 May 2026 and runs until 29 May 2026. The results will be announced on 11 June 2026.
What is the NEC?
The NEC is made up of representatives elected from all of UNISON’s regions and service groups, as well as seats for four Black members, two young members and two disabled members. It has the power to act on behalf of the union and is responsible for implementing UNISON policy and delivering on the union’s objectives and priorities.
UNISON’s rulebook says we have to elect our NEC every two years.
