- 2026 National Women's Conference
- Date
- 17 October 2025
- Decision
- Carried as Amended
Conference notes that many women members are lone workers and they often feel at risk especially at nights or in isolated situations, including when travelling to and from work.
Women work shift patterns that require them to travel in the dark, they open and close buildings, visit service users homes in isolated locations and in poorly lit streets, rely on sometimes unreliable public transport and their employer takes no responsibility for their safety before or after work.
Employers risk assessments seldom consider how a woman gets to work or returns home safely. If they live alone, no-one would know if they got home safely until they did not turn up for their next shift.
Conference believes that employers should consider the risks involved in women getting to and from work and calls on the Women’s Committee to;
1)Raise awareness in the union, liaising with all Service Groups, of the risks to women travelling to and from work
2. Encourage branches to negotiate with all employers to provide mobile phones, GPS monitors, Skyguard with alarm facilities, and panic alarms to all women who are lone working in the community or working shifts at night.
