Clean Water UNISON report

Back to all Motions

Conference
2025 Water, Environment & Transport Conference
Date
6 February 2025
Decision
Carried

Conference welcomes the production of the report, “clean water – a case for public ownership” and the subsequent parliamentary launch both in 2024.

Whilst the report has been welcomed, the work must continue to try to impress on any future Government, the current failings of the system and to campaign for radical change in the future.

The present disintegrated water industry in the hands of an assortment of private companies has led to wide divergence of terms of conditions among members, with working practices, pay, pensions and other core terms being the subject of a postcode lottery.

Conference calls upon the SGE to promote the report within UNISON and to appropriate stakeholders, to ensure this issue does not “wither on the vine” and that public ownership remains at the top of the agenda for our union and in public discourse.

The WET SGE is asked to consider promoting the report both within the internal union and elsewhere with appropriate stakeholders to ensure that this issue does not “wither on the vine” and is kept firmly at the top of agendas with organisations such as UNISON and other interested bodies who are rightly campaigning for change in issues such as ensuring watercourses are kept devoid of deliberate sewage spills.
