Following that the High Court has ruled that participation by police officers in a Pride event was unlawful on the basis that it breached duties of impartiality; this conference believes that Police Staff members as employees have the right to be involved and take part in Pride events across the UK and to express their sexuality and gender identity at these events. Police Staff when not at work, are free to engage in any lawful political activity including expressions of solidarity with LGBT+ groups and to attend their events.
This conference puts equalities at the heart of all we do, by challenging discrimination and bigotry, and showing our support for LGBT+ people, which is an important part of that agenda.
Conference therefore calls on the SGE to:
1)Provide advice and guidance to branches on the rights of Police Staff members to attend and take part in Pride events.
2)Put out a statement in support of LGBT+ members in policing.
3)Consider the production of UNISON Police Staff specific Pride materials for use at Pride events.
