The Energy industry is undergoing a significant transformation, requiring diverse perspectives to drive innovation and sustainability. Current statistics indicate that LGBT+ individuals remain underrepresented in the energy workforce, facing barriers to entry and advancement due to discrimination and lack of support.

Studies show that inclusive workplaces lead to higher employee satisfaction, retention and overall productivity, which are critical for the success of smaller energy companies in a competitive market.

The 2024 Pride in Energy survey—conducted by Energy Networks Association with support from Ofgem, Energy UK, and the Energy Institute—found that 49% of respondents had experienced or witnessed LGBT+ discrimination in their workplace over the past five years, up from 29% in 2023. While only 22% of energy sector workers now view the industry as inclusive. The survey also indicates a growing demand for tangible support and visible advocacy for LGBT+ employees within the energy sector, highlighting the need for systemic change rather than specific measures.

Conference calls on the national LGBT+ committee to:

1)Work with the Energy service group executive, to map SME energy companies within their different regions, with a view to creating a recruitment campaign around ED&I.

2)Work with Labour Link to lobby government and relevant bodies for funding and policies that assist small energy companies in adopting effective ED&I and LGBT+ inclusive employment practices.

3)To report back at LGBT + Conference 2026.
