Conference recognises the inherent dignity and equal rights of all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, and affirms our unwavering support for the LGBT+ community worldwide. Any actions or policies that undermine LGBT+ rights and freedoms must be condemned in the strongest terms.
Conference is especially concerned when the policies and actions of the United States (US), the United Kingdom’s (UK’s) most important ally, negatively impact LGBT+ individuals, including:
a)The rollback of anti-discrimination protections for LGBT+ people in healthcare, education, and employment.
b)The ban on transgender individuals serving in the military.
c)The undermining of international efforts to promote LGBT+ rights.
Conference is not blind to the impact that US policy can have on other countries. It is recognised that where the US leads, many other countries often follow. UNISON stands in solidarity with the international LGBT+ community, and Conference believes that we need to work tirelessly toward a world where everyone can live authentically and without fear.
We call upon the National LGBT+ Committee to:
1)Work with the international committee to advocate for the protection and promotion of LGBT+ rights globally.
2)Work with Labour Link to combat any potential erosion of LGBT+ rights in the UK that might be considered as leverage for trade deals.
3)Work to oppose any policies or actions that discriminate against or harm LGBT+ individuals, and the community as a whole.
4)Identify initiatives that foster inclusivity, equality, and understanding, and develop guidance for Regional and Branch International officers on how to support appropriate initiatives.
