Campaigning for LGBT+ Rights in Every Region

Back to all Motions

Conference
2025 National LGBT+ Conference
Date
1 August 2025
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference notes:

1)LGBT+ Rights are under attack across the UK, Europe and globally.

2)UNISON organises across 12 Regions throughout the UK.

3)There are disparities across the 4 nations in LGBT+ rights, as well as within nations, for example varying entitlement to assisted conception across health trusts.

4)Often phrases such as ‘UK Law’ are used incorrectly when referring to law that applies to only some regions.

5)While there are various LGBT+ strategies and action plans in England, Scotland and Wales, the Sexual Orientation strategy for Northern Ireland remains undelivered, despite cross party agreement in the 2020 New Decade New Approach agreement.

Conference believes:

a)LGBT+ people are entitled to full enjoyment of their human rights, regardless of where they live.

b)Healthcare services for LGBT+ people such as assisted conception and gender affirming care must be adequately resourced and available on an equal basis across the UK.

c)UNISON should campaign for the highest level of International Human Rights Compliant LGBT+ policy across the UK, at national and devolved government levels.

d)UNISON has been at the forefront of LGBT+ campaigning, and must continue to be.

Conference calls on the National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Plus (LGBT+) committee, working with the relevant committees in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales:

i)To ensure regional variations are given due regard in campaigning work.

ii)To ensure all UNISON policy includes the particular needs of LGBT+ people in each region as appropriate.

iii)To explore how Article 2 of the Windsor Framework may be utilised in campaigning against the rollback of LGBT+ Rights.
