There appears to be a false assumption that the principal post holders of Retired Members Sections such as Chair, Secretary, Treasurer etc have had experience of similar roles prior to retirement. Additionally, that we have a clear understanding of procedures/processes both regionally and nationally or indeed at Conference.

This can be a misjudgment; a lack of appropriate knowledge can lead to time wasting and frustration for Retired Members Sections.

We have sought training and guidance from Unison on these subjects. In response we were informed that retired members were entitled to partake in any of the training, resources/opportunities our union offers. However, training opportunities for the specific needs of retired members are not available.

Clearly there is a requirement for resources and training specific to the needs of retired members. We are fortunate to have a training department capable of providing it and keeping it updated. Subject to further discussion, the delivery technique might be via a combination of a handbook and downloadable resources.

Conference therefore instructs the National Retired Members Committee to

1)Liaise with Unison sources to urgently prepare a training package specific to setting up and running a Retired Members section with the necessary officers i.e. Secretary, Chair, Treasurer.

2)Produce an updated version of the Retired Members Secretary’s Handbook.
