Conference notes that UNISON is the largest trade union representing police staff in England and Wales, and in Scotland.
Conference further notes that the first Police Staff Week of Celebration and Recognition was launched this year, and was marked by the National Police Chiefs Council, the College of Policing and many individual police services, as well as UNISON.
Conference applauds work conducted on the We are Police Staff campaign to highlight the vital role of police staff and the risks to some of those roles due to cuts, as well as work done to raise awareness of the police staff workforce internally within UNISON.
However, Conference believes that more still needs to be done on raising awareness of police staff across the wider UNISON membership and is concerned that criticism of policing which is occasionally heard at other UNISON conferences is not always conducted respectfully.
Conference therefore calls on the Police and Justice Service Group Executive to
1)Continue to build on and promote the We are Police Staff campaign, developing a range of supportive documentation including articles exploring more police staff roles within policing, and explaining the high standards police staff have to maintain via the Police Staff Standards of Professional Behaviour.
2. Encourage regional Police and Justice Service Group Executives and local Police and Justice branches to plan activities for future Police Staff Week of Celebration and Recognition events.
3. Conduct a review of current UNISON Police and Justice related communication channels with a view to identifying, building in and sharing best practice to improve the voice of the UNISON Police and Justice Service Group internally and externally.
