Police Staff Post Incident Managers

Conference
2024 Police, Probation and CAFCASS Conference
Date
18 June 2024
Decision
Carried

Conference will be well aware of the success of UNISON Post Incident Process (PIP) accredited reps and the incredible support they provide our members following a death or serious injury (DSI) after police contact. Another benefit they’ve provided has been by ensuring the inclusion of police staff in a process that was previously incorrectly thought to be exclusive to police officers.

It’s crucially important that the inclusion of police staff in the PIP is not an afterthought and that the involvement of police staff is embedded into the entire process.

Conference, despite the recognition that police staff should be part of the Post Incident Management (PIM) process they are for the most part limited to being a key police witness (KPW) following a DSI; very few of us are accredited PIM managers and Appointed Officers (AO) as part of the process management.

The use of police staff as PIMs reinforces the fact that a PIM is not exclusive to police officers, and it creates an environment for the equitable treatment of all involved in a DSI. Additionally, it opens up training opportunities where police staff can learn new skills.

Conference, this motion calls on the SGE to:

• survey branches to see how widespread the use of police staff in PIM roles is;

• seek best practice for the implementation of police staff PIMs; and,

• share with branches.
