Pension Fund Trustees

Back to all Motions

Conference
2014 Water, Environment & Transport Service Group
Date
21 February 2014
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference notes:

a) Many funded pension schemes include provision for member nominated trustees.

b) The financial crisis has highlighted the need for appropriate oversight and responsible management of workers capital.

c) Proposed changes to the Local Government Pension Scheme are likely to extend the rights of workers to be represented on pensions committees;

d) In those schemes that allow worker representation, UNISON has adopted a variety of approaches to identifying representatives. In some workplaces, a ballot of the whole membership is held. In others, nomination is made from existing bargaining committees.

e) The latter arrangements have the effect of denying the majority of members an opportunity to take part, and restrict opportunities in this technically complex area to a small proportion of the membership.

Conference therefore resolves that: It shall be the policy of this service group that, where opportunities exist for member representation as pensions trustees or pensions committee members, the arrangements put in place are such that all UNISON members within the workplace have an equal opportunity to seek election to those positions.
