There is no place for Transphobia

Conference believes that transphobia and bullying of trans people can still be common place in our workplaces and society, but unfortunately it can sometimes occur within in our union. Many transgender workers face a difficult time at work, but when they turn to their trade union they expect a much better response. Conference it seems some branch and regions are still ill equipped to deal with trans issues, and more worryingly some perpetuate the same bully or exclusion which happens to transgender members elsewhere.

According to Engendered Penalties research over 10% of trans people have experienced verbal abuse at work.

Trans people who face bullying at work may change career or even leave the workplace entirely. Workplace bullying and harassment can have a long lasting impact on self confidence and career development.

Conference believes there is no place for transphobia in our workplaces, society and in our union, transgender members have played a key part in our self organised group and we must ensure that the entire union is a safe place for transgender members.

Conference therefore calls on National lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Committee to:

1) Advertise the transgender fact sheets to all regions and branches;

2) Actively encourage regional LGBT self organised groups to encourage LGBT members to join their self organised group.;

3) Ensure all equality training given to branches and regions contains how to combat Transphobia in the workplace, union and society;

4)Highlight active transgender members in varying positions across UNISON to encourage more to become active.
