- 2012 National LGBT Conference
- 25 July 2012
Conference recalls motion 10 carried at 2010 UNISON lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Conference which noted the anomaly in the self-organised group’s (SOG) structure that, whereas at branch level and at open meetings at other levels LGBT retired members may take part and speak for themselves, at this conference they are silenced and must rely on others to speak for them. The motion sought to resolve this anomaly with an arrangement, like that at National Delegate Conference, that there be delegates at this conference elected by and from among LGBT retired members with the right to speak but not to vote. The motion instructed the National LGBT Committee to investigate this, consult as need be and report with proposals.
Conference regrets to note that, eighteen months later, the National LGBT Committee is yet to do anything at all to implement this resolution.
Conference believes that if others in UNISON were to patronise LGBT members like this – to pretend to agree with us but do nothing in practice to address our concerns – we would up in arms about it. No more is it acceptable for this SOG to patronise retired members.
Conference instructs the National LGBT Committee to act on the 2010 resolution without further delay and to make a full report to next year’s conference.
