Conference notes the report “Apprenticeships and gender” produced by the TUC and YWCA England and Wales in October 2010.

Conference is concerned that the report finds that “although the problems of occupational segregation, gender stereotyping, poor careers advice, low pay and lack of progression for women in the apprenticeships system is well documented and well understood, little progress has been made in recent years in terms of narrowing the gender pay gap or encouraging more women into non traditional apprenticeships”.

Conference believes that challenging and ending gender stereotyping is essential, and that as trade unionists we have a duty to take this issue up in our workplaces.

Conference agrees to call on the National Women’s Committee to:

1)Ensure the report is circulated to all regional women’s groups.

2)Encourage all regional women’s groups to discuss the issues and recommendations raised in the report with young women from their respective regional young members forum.

3)Hold a discussion at a forthcoming meeting of the National Women’s Committee with the aim of considering any feedback from regional women’s groups, in order to develop guidance for branches on challenging stereotyping in local apprenticeship schemes.
