The European Parliament has designated 2012 as the European year for Active Aging and Solidarity between Generations. (European year 2012)

MEPs believe that more should be done to enable older people to realise their potential for well-being and participation in society, while providing them with adequate protection, security and care when they need it.

Conference notes that the objectives of the European year 2012 are to achieve greater solidarity between generations through:

i) Active aging in employment;

ii) Encouraging active aging in the community;

iii) Promoting independent living

Conference therefore calls on the National Retired Members’ Committee to take appropriate action to raise awareness of the European year 2012 amongst UNISON retired members and the wider union.
