Conference
2011 Local Government Service Group Conference
Date
22 February 2011
Decision
Carried as Amended

This Conference deplores the recent announcement of the tri-borough merger of Hammersmith and Fulham, Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea we are now seeing the brutal attacks to our terms and conditions, job’s and pensions. Over the next three years the tri-borough proposal are suggesting that there will be a saving of 35 million a year across the three councils by combining these services, however we fear this would mean a reduction in service provision to the most vulnerable in our society and a high proportion of our members being made redundant as a result.

The proposal could see the devastation of children’s services, environmental services, corporate services and adult social care provisions. This proposal could be in place by the end of this year, and could threaten the very existence of the union’s ability to organise and campaign if these proposals are allowed to develop.

These cuts will affect the most vulnerable in our society and have a severe impact on voluntary sector and community groups as their funding and grants are withdrawn which could see the extinction of these services.

Defending public services, service provision and the jobs of UNISON members are critical issues for all members. It is essential that we use what powers exist to hold public authorities to their legal duty not to discriminate and we organise and campaign to defend public services.

We call on the Local Government Service Group to:

1)Actively campaign to protect the terms and conditions of members;

2)Fully support branches who are facing these attacks.
