Conference
2011 National Black Members' Conference
Date
8 September 2010
Decision
Carried

In times of recession and job cuts, migrant workers are not only going to feel the rise in racist attitudes, but they can be certain that immigration legislation will follow trend and imposed increasingly restrictive measures. Most of our members who have not yet obtained residency will be likely to be forced to go home. Others still in precarious situation suffer exploitation in silence as a result.

Migrant workers are valued members of this union. We have hugely appreciated the immigration help line put in place through UNISON Direct and Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants as well as local initiatives such as our monthly face to face immigration advice clinic in Northern Ireland.

Conference calls on the Black Members Committee to work with the National Executive Council and other appropriate bodies to ensure that such services continue; and to continue to campaign against ever more draconian and arbitrary immigration legislation which harms our members and our public services.
