INVESTMENT IN HARDCORE PORNOGRAPHY

Conference
2010 National Women's Conference
Date
21 October 2009
Decision
Carried

This Conference is concerned at the growing body of evidence supplied by media investigation, that major corporations such as Vodaphone, BT, Sky and Amazon are benefiting in some way from the trade in hardcore pornography and that UNISON members’ pension funds may be invested in companies with an involvement in a trade which is based on the exploitation, degradation and objectification of women and their bodies.

We believe that this is as much of an “ethical investment” issue as the arms trade or environmental pollution and so call on the National Women’s Committee to carry out research into how widespread the investment in hardcore pornography is.

We further call on the National Women’s Committee to work with UNISON pensions department and branches to raise awareness amongst members, so that all UNISON members can find out from their pension trustees where their monies are being invested and to also encourage members to take up the role of pension trustee.

We urge the National Women’s Committee to work with the Labour Link and together, lobby the Government to express our strong opposition to this trade and the role of large, outwardly respectable companies in perpetuating it.
