This Conference calls upon the National Women’s Committee to work with the National Young Members Committee to highlight the importance of young women becoming members of a pension scheme.
As women we need to ensure that young women are aware of the benefits of paying into a pension scheme at the earliest opportunity, so as to avoid poverty in later life.
Although measures such as Home Responsibilities protection is in place to give an automatic right to National Insurance Contributions while away from the workplace to bring up children, young women still need to be aware of the benefits of paying into a scheme. Particularly as many young women do not see the benefits of becoming a member of a pension scheme especially those in low paid jobs.
National Women’s Conference is requesting that information is specifically aimed at young women is produced on the benefits of contributing into a scheme and that the National Women’s Committee use their links with the wider trade union to highlight this important issue wherever possible.
Furthermore, we request that the National Women’s Committee work with the Pensions department to find ways to encourage more women to get involved with Pensions Committees and become Trustees of schemes so that a woman’s perspective can be properly represented at the highest level as experience shows that few women get involved with this important subject.
