Conference
2009 National Women's Conference
Date
22 October 2008
Decision
Carried

This National Women’s Conference welcomes the Government commissioned Corston Report and its recommendations in respect of women in prisons in the UK.

In particular, the recommendations of small multifunctional non custodial centres widely dispersed across the country. As the Corston Report states prison is not the best place for non violent women offenders that do not pose a threat to society. This conference recognises the impact that custodial sentences have on women and their families. Examples of alternatives to prison are available in other European countries.

While we recognise that the Government has accepted forty of the forty three recommendations of the Corston Report this Women’s Conference is concerned that the Government has not set a timetable or allocated adequate funding on these recommendations.

The National Women’s Conference calls on the National Women’s Committee to:

1)Liaise with Labour Link to urge the Government to fulfil the recommendations of the Corston Report;

2)Highlight the Corston Report and its recommendations especially to support the establishment of multifunctional non custodial centres dispersed throughout the UK.
