No National Identity Cards for Airport Workers

Decision
Carried

Conference confirms its opposition to the proposal to require airside workers at UK airports to hold national identity cards as a condition of employment. Despite the opposition of UNISON and the other trade unions the airside workers at Manchester Airport and London City Airport will have to apply for an ID card in the next few weeks.

Conference notes that airport workers already go through security checks before being issued with airside passes. Insisting that these workers also hold an ID card will not improve these security checks. Conference also notes that there is little support for ID cards among the UK population and does not believe that they will improve the security of citizens and visitors to this country.

Conference deplores this attack on the civil liberties of airport workers and the potential restriction on them to pursue lawful employment in this sector.

Conference asks the Executive to work with Labour Link to raise this issue with the Transport Minister and the Home Secretary.
