- Decision
- Carried as Amended
Conference believes that the best tool to recruit Black members into UNISON is by highlighting our success for individual members and collectively at a local, regional and national level.
Conference further believes that more Black activists must take up active roles within UNISON at all levels as this will in turn also promote and encourage further recruitment and participation of Black members across UNISON, within branches, the regions, National Executive Council (NEC), self organised groups and the service groups.
Conference believes there are many potential Black people who would be interested in becoming union members but they have not been approached or invited to join.
Conference instructs the National Black Members’ Committee (NBMC) to work with the National Executive Council (NEC) to:
1.Develop and fund advertising materials and resources specific to the recruitment of Black members;
2.Work with organisations like Operation Black Vote, NUS Black Students’ Campaign, UK Black Pride, 1990 Trust and others to reach sections of the Black community that are already active and organised to join UNISON;
3.Fund a recruitment advertising campaign in Black community publications, including the Black media;
4.Conduct an audit of the RMS to establish the current levels of Black membership;
5.Update the RMS list of ethnicity group categories to properly capture the diversity of UNISON’s Black membership;
6.Encourage branches, regions, the NEC and service groups to review how their recruitment process could benefit from the involvement of the NBMC working alongside Regional Black Member’s Committees/Groups;
7.Present the recruitment of Black members as a regular item at the Equality Liaison Committee and NBMC meetings and share this information with Regional Black Member’s Committees/Groups.
