Opposition to Single Group Funding Principles

Back to all Motions

Conference
2009 National Black Members' Conference
Date
15 September 2008
Decision
Carried

Conference notes the outcome of the judicial review gained by Southall Black Sisters into Ealing Council’s decision to withdraw their funding. The finding being that the Council had failed to do a proper assessment of the potential impact of such a move.

The Council’s decision was in part based on Government promoted principle that single group funding has a better chance of promoting social cohesion than funding for individual minority groups.

This ideology fails to recognise that generic services often fail to deliver effective services for Black groups and women and that groundbreaking work like that of Southall Black Sisters has actually created the only type of service provision available on some issues.

Conference instructs the National Black Members Committee (NBMC) to liaise with other relevant sections of UNISON and Labour Link to raise concern about the single group strategy and to ensure that monitoring is in place to identify the impact of the strategy for UNISON members and affiliated community groups.

A report back to be made by the NBMC to the 2010 National Black Members Conference.
