SUPPORTING THE WOMEN OF BURMA

Back to all Motions

Conference
2008 National Women's Conference
Date
25 October 2007
Decision
Carried

This conference resolves to support the women of Burma who are risking imprisonment, beatings and death from their government in their struggle for democratic change in their country.

After the 1988 uprising, thousands of Burmese men were killed, imprisoned or forced to flee the country. Women took a stand to combat oppression and promote democracy. If caught by the military they face years in prison. Some have left their families and work in hiding, believing that only by ending the current system will their families have a future. It is estimated that since 1988 more than 500 women have served prison terms because of their political involvement.

We ask the National Women’s Committee to work with the NEC and UNISON’s International Committee:

1)To highlight and support these Burmese Women in their fight for democracy

2)To request branches affiliate to the Burma Campaign
