Conference notes that two in five women over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis, although it affects people of all ages. Despite this condition affecting around 40% of women over the age of 50 only 30% of NHS trusts offer automatic bone scanning to women following breaking a bone. Therefore a huge number of women are not diagnosed and do not receive the follow-up treatment they need.
Conference calls upon the National Women’s Committee to:-
1)Produce a leaflet on osteoporosis for inclusion in the Women’s health pack, including a section on exercises women can do to improve bone strength and reduce the likelihood of breaking a bone.
2)Work with Labour Link to influence the government to provide more funding so women over the age of 50 have access to bone scanning.
3)Invite a guest speaker from the National Osteoporosis Society to address next year’s conference.
