MOONCUPS – GREETING OUR PERIODS

Back to all Motions

Conference
2008 National Women's Conference
Date
25 October 2007
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference notes the damage caused to the environment by non biodegradable sanitary products i.e. Tampons and Sanitary Pads. These products end up in landfill and all to often our oceans and watercourses.

There is a simple solution to this problem – Mooncups. The Mooncup is a reusable menstrual cup around two inches long and made from soft silicone rubber. It works internally like a tampon but collects menstrual fluid rather than absorbing. Unlike tampons and sanitary pads the Mooncup is not a disposable product, so you only need to buy one.

The Mooncup contains no bleaches, deodorizers or absorbency gels. It does not interfere with your healthy vaginal environment, nor has it been associated with toxic shock syndrome.

The Mooncup can be cleaned by boiling for around five minutes in a pan of water.

Conference calls upon the National Women’s Committee to:

1)Publish a leaflet on Mooncups and the environmental benefits of using them.

2) Continue to work with ACTSA and the Dignity Period campaign to provide sanitary products suitable for the environmental and cultural conditions in which women in Zimbabwe live.
