POST OFFICE CLOSURES

Back to all Motions

Conference
2008 Retired Members' Conference
Date
12 June 2008
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference notes the ever increasing closures of post offices across the whole of the UK. Post offices are not just somewhere to buy stamps or post letters and parcels but are in fact a vital asset both in rural and urban areas. Many pensioners do not have a banking account and particularly in rural areas post offices are vital link for pensioners with the outside world.

Conference urges the National Executive Council to campaign effectively using UNISON friendly Members of Parliament to prevent further closures and to seek to re-open those closed wherever possible if need be with private firms such as W H Smith, provided these arrangements are in accordance with the Post Office Code of Practice on Network change.

Conference instructs the National Retired Members’ Committee to further campaign with the NPC and other user groups on issues affecting the elderly to prevent further closures and re-open where ever possible closed post offices. The National Retired Members’ Committee to report progress on the campaign to Regional Retired Members’ Committees commencing in December 2008.
