Conference notes that life for many of our members can be difficult. In addition to the challenges of heterosexism, homophobia, bipobia and transphobia, for many LGBT people rural living presents added difficulties including social and geographical isolation, transportation problems, and lack of basic resources, facilities and services.
To address the social exclusion and isolation of rural LGBT people, Conference instructs the National LGBT Committee to:
1. Explore ways of tackling social and geographical exclusion for rural LGBT members, including identifying potential partner organisations working on similar issues;
2.Examine potential funding streams for research seeking to identify the specific additional challenges rural living presents and how multiple identities such as LGBT and other minority status can impact (or not) on quality of life/priorities;
3. Circulate and examine any existing research recommendations that would assist UNISON LGBT groups in enabling the participation of their rural members and consequently minimising LGBT member’s social and geographical isolation;
4. Promote any relevant training or initiatives to branches or regions that would enhance resources, facilities and services for rural LGBT members.
