Conference
2007 National Women's Conference
Date
23 October 2006
Decision
Carried

Conference welcomes the work carried out by the National Women’s Committee on involving LGBT women in women’s self-organisation. Conference notes that it is now nearly two years since the rule amendment was passed that introduced the LGBT group and enabled bisexual and transgender women to self-organise on the grounds of their sexual orientation and gender identity for the first time.

This may have provided the opportunity for some LGBT women to become involved in activism for the very first time. Conference acknowledges that some LGBT women may wish to participate in women’s self-organisation as well as other self-organised groups that they identify with.

Conference therefore urges regional women’s committees to work with regional LGBT committees/groups to:

1)identify how LGBT women could be encouraged to participate in women’s self-organisation;

2)send examples of good practice to the National Women’s Officer.

Conference instructs the National Women’s Committee to:

a)consider whether there are any barriers to participation in women’s self-organisation from LGBT women’s perspectives;

b)issue guidance to regional women’s committees for promoting participation by LGBT women in women’s self-organisation;

c)report back to 2008 National Women’s Conference on developments and further proposals.
